Paula Deen & Anthony Bourdain: Donut Burger Under Fire
Paula Deen, the star of the Food Network, came out recently and disclosed that she has type II diabetes. Paula Deen revealed her condition on NBC's The Today Show, and when asked if she believed her
southern style of cooking caused this condition, Deen difused the interviewer by stating, "There are a lot of factors that go into developing diabetes." Deen then went on to say that she was diagnosed with the condition three years ago.
After Deen let the world know about her medical ailment, celebrity chef Anthony Bourdain let the public know about his feelings towards her cooking.
To put it bluntly, Bordain states that, ""When your signature dish is hamburger in between a donut, and you've been cheerfully selling this stuff knowing all along that you've got Type 2 Diabetes. ... It's in bad taste if nothing else."
True, there are other causes of type II diabetes other than participating in a diet high in fats & sugars....but the Paula Deen diet certainly doesn't help a person avoid the disease.

So is Bourdain right? Is Paula Deen living a double life after getting her diabetic diagnosis three years ago & continuing to push unhealthy foods on the American public?
That arguement can certainly be made, but if I knew my kids were diabetic, would I have them watch her programming?
At WellBalance, we work with campers and their family members who are dealing with diabetes. Due to their current condition, there is no way in the world the WellBalance staff would ever serve a donut burger, cake soup, or fried peanut butter & jelly to our campers who are trying to lead a healthy lifestyle.
But then again....some folks prefer taste over health. If it wasn't true, would Paula Deen have any viewers?
